Comencé este proyecto en 2004 pidiéndole a gente cercana que me donaran por unos días algun objeto que guardaran de una persona conocida que ya no estuviera viva y una fotografía que conservaran de esa persona. Posteriormente combiné ambos elementos digitalmente, dibujando un gesto de recuerdo de las vidas que habían sido y que, a través de imágenes y objetos, seguían de alguna forma existiendo en forma presente. ¿Puede la fotografía ayudar a llenar el vacío de la muerte? ¿Basta una fotografía para recordar la existencia de alguien? ¿Son los objetos y las imagenes elementos clave para devolvernos la certeza de un pasado? Quizás en la longevidad de los objetos y las imágenes encontremos la misma verdad: lo inanimado nunca perece. Después de que nos hayamos ido es posible que partes de lo que éramos sean guardadas por otros en un intento de intentar retener algún fragmento.

I started this project in 2004, asking close people to give me an object that once belonged to someone they had known and had passed and a photograph they kept of the person in cuestion. I later combined both elements, as a gesture of remembrance to the lives than had ended but, through images and objects, continued to be.
Can photography help fill the emptiness of death? Is a photograph enough to remember someone’s existence? Could objects and photographs be considered key elements in bringing us back the certainty of a past?
Perhaps in the longevity of objects and images we find the same painful truth: the inanimate cannot die. After we are gone, we might be remembered through small things, pieces of who we were will be kept by others in an attempt to hold on to the past.
